Old Real Estate

I took down the robins nest from last summer. Now I'm waiting to see if they decide to set up housekeeping in the same spot this year. It's surprising how clean and well preserved the old nest is.

What a perfect saucer of a nest!
Birds are so impressive with their architectural skills!

The robin's have woven plastic from a discarded bag into an old nest, the perfect sample of recycling.

I thought that some birds used the old nests over again, just refurbishing them a little if they were usable. Maybe I'm wrong. (That does happen once in awhile:)

Hi Rusty, have you had birds return to re-nest in previous years? We have never had them in the same place, but then the tree that was by the front porch is gone and that was a favorite spot.

wow!! what a perfect next!!
it looks like it's lined with dried mud!

i'll take a guess...and say, yes! they will be back to the same nesting place...but hopefully, they won't be wondering why they're previous abode has been repossessed! :)

Many sources say they don't reuse their nests and some say that they do. I think they don't though as the condition of the nest deteriorates through winter and as the sites point out there can be parasites in the old nests.

At least with Robins I was told it's best to remove the old nest if you want them to use the same spot next year. In this case the nest was still in good condition because it was completely sheltered under the eves. There is still no sign of new nest building around here.

However the redwings have returned to the big cedar near the same spot. They like that tree.

This is the best time of year.
BTW
I've had to bury the violets. They had a terrible death. I shall leave violets for now.
Everything is coming up outdoors, anyway.
spotted an empty nest, too. I think it is last years. We shall see!
Cheers from Perth!
